Record Jack Plane No. 05 1/2C (Corrugated)

record 05 1/2

The Record no. 05 1/2C (Corrugated) jack plane is a 15" (38.1cm) long plane designed for the general preliminary work of preparing the true sides and edges of the wood, it can also be used for accurate shooting of moderately long edges. The plane is fitted with a 2 3/8" (6.1cm) blade and weighs in at around 2.72kg (6lbs).

The 'C' in the model number indicates the plane has a corrugated sole; a base with a series of parallel grooves. The corrugated sole was designed with the intention of reducing friction between the plane and the surface being planed.

Purely judging by the limited number of corrugated based number '5 1/2' model planes which appear on the market today, I think it would be safe to assume there were considerably less of these types of planes produced than the standard smooth based planes. This was probably partly due to the corrugated base plane being the most expensive version.

The older C & J Hampton Record planes have quite a following of late from both users and collectors. From observing the sale of secondhand Record planes and Stanley planes, we have noticed Record planes generally command slightly higher prices than their Stanley equivalent plane of the period. These Record 05 1/2 planes were probably the second most used number '5 1/2' model of the 20th century behind the Stanley no. 5 1/2 equivalent.

Number 5 1/2 jack planes are still being made; model number '5 1/2' planes which are made today include Clifton, Veritas and Lie-Nielsen. As far as I am aware there are no makers today who produce a number 5 1/2 plane with a corrugated sole.
