The Record 073 shoulder plane is 8 1/8" (20.6cm) in length, weighs approximately 1.81kg (4lb) and has a 1 1/4" (3.2cm) wide blade.

This is a specialist plane designed for trimming and adjusting of shoulders to the stiles etc. The Record 073 plane is used by cabinet makers, joiners and tradesmen for final fitting of joints. The blade is shouldered and full width, set at a low angle with screw adjustment for accuracy. The 073 plane blade has a slot which locates on the adjusting screw. The blade is secured by the shaped lever cap which has a securing screw underneath. The mouth of the plane can be adjusted by means of a screw at the front, this opens and closes the mouth to suit the type of cut and finish required.

The Record 073 proved to be the most successful of the Record shoulder plane designs, enjoying a production spell of a little over 60 years. This plane succeeded its predecessor, the Edward Preston 1368 rebate plane to become one of the most popular shoulder planes of the 20th century. The 073 shoulder plane was heavily influenced by the design of the 1368 Preston shoulder plane, which it must lay much credit to for its success.

This plane is still very popular today, especially if they are in good condition, however finding these planes in great condition are becoming a lot harder to find.
