Record Jack Plane No. 08 SS (Stay Set)

if you have this plane for sale, please contact us

The Record no. 08 SS (Stay Set) jointer plane is a 24" (61cm) long plane designed for the joiner and carpenter who had a regular need for planing long pieces of timber. The accuracy of this plane coupled with the long sole simplify and speed up this kind of work. The plane is fitted with a 2 5/8" (6.7cm) blade and weighs in at around 4.08kg (9lbs).

The 'SS' in the model number stands for 'Stay Set'; this is a special two piece thicker cap iron consisting of an upper cap iron and a lower deflector, the idea being you can very quickly remove the deflector and hone or sharpen the blade plenty of times without the need to keep resetting the upper cap iron. The 'Stay Set' cap iron was advertised as being chatter proof guaranteed, this boast was due to the additional third pressure point which tradional cap irons didn't have. 'SS' models have the attractive 'SS' mark on the lever cap.

The older C & J Hampton Record planes have quite a following of late from both users and collectors. From observing the sale of secondhand Record planes and Stanley planes, we have noticed Record planes generally command slightly higher prices than their Stanley equivalent plane of the period. I have heard a number of people in the last 10 years say they prefer the look and feel of old Record planes over the old Stanley planes. These Record 08 planes were probably the most or the second most used number '8' model of the 20th century. The Stanley no. 8 equivalent being the other popular number '8' model.

As far as I am aware, there is only one manufacturer of a model number '8' jointer plane today, that manufacturer is Lie-Nielsen Toolworks USA. Lie Nielson have designed most of their bench planes in a similar manner to the design of the old Stanley Bedrock planes.
