Record Skew Rabbet Plane No. 712

record 712

The Record 712 plane is 8 5/8" (22cm) in length, weighs approximately 1.12kg (2 1/2lb) and has a 1 1/4" (3.1cm) wide blade.

This plane is ideal when there is a need to cut across the grain, especially when a good finish is needed. A rebate plane which has a cutter square to the sole will not always leave a good finish whereas a skewed blade will leave an almost perfectly smooth finish. The reason a skewed blade is better suited to this function is due to the angle in which the blade cuts the wood. A great deal of attention should be taken when sharpening the blade on this plane to ensure the right angle is obtained so the optimal cut is achieved.

The Record 712 has the nice feature of having a detachable adjustable depth gauge (complete with washer and thumbscrew). Other parts on this plane include the stove enamel blue body and lever cap, lever cap knurled screw, lever cap screw and the skewed blade.

This plane is quite rare due to the short production run in the late 1930's to early 1940's, however this is probably the most common of the Record 712, 713, and 714 planes.

Plane Use

The Record 712 skew plane is primarily used for achieving a fine finish when cutting across the grain.
