Record Technical Jack Plane No. T5 SS (Stay Set)

record t5 ss

The Record T5 SS jack plane is a 13" (33cm) long plane designed for the general preliminary work of preparing the true sides and edges of the wood, it can also be used for accurate shooting of moderately long edges. The plane is fitted with a 2" (5.1cm) blade and weighs in at around 2.27kg (5lbs).

The Record technical jack plane was primarily designed for use in schools and colleges for the training of boys and youths. The design changes from the Record 05 jack plane to make this a suitable plane for the proposed users and the possible miss-use the plane may receive in the hands of the school boys and youth's. The T5 SS plane was also aimed at the craftsman and serious amateur.

The Record T5 SS plane was shortened to 330mm (13") in comparison to the standard 05 model, the inch was removed from the back of the plane base. Also the handle moved back on the plane, the sides of the plane were made taller with strengthening ribs, the handle and knob poistion was strengthened with ribs in the casting. These elements made the plane more robust for the proposed users. The high sides made the plane easy to use with a shute board, the plane has a side handle which could be fitted on either side of the plane and eases use when the plane is used on its side.

This plane can be used with a stay set blade and cap iron; standard issue was with a standard blade and cap iron.

The older C & J Hampton Record planes have quite a following of late from both users and collectors. There are no other makers who have made a similar model of this plane, nor is there a maker today who makes a similar model. For these reasons I would say this is certainly a collectable plane of the future.

It is quite common to find this plane without the side handle or sometimes with a user made replacement handle. A lost or replaced handle will almost certainly have a big effect with the value of the plane, much the same as with collectable tool or item.

Plane Use

The intended use of the Record T5 plane is as with any jack plane; used for the preliminary work of preparing the true sides and edges of the wood.
